Ship Channel Cay

• Description:

  Ship Channel Cay is the northernmost cay in the Exuma chain. While there are some other land masses further north, they are awash under harsh weather and are little more than barren rock. As the name implies the cay forms the south side of a relatively wide opening used by commercial shipping when passing from the north end of Exuma Sound to and from the Great Bahama Bank.   

  Most of the shoreline of the island is rocky but there is a small patch of beach south of a high rocky point about 0.75nm from the southern tip of the cay. There is good protection in prevailing conditions and very little swell despite the proximity of the anchorage from Exuma Sound. The anchorage is a good place to stage for vessels wishing to head for North Eleuthera or Spanish Wells from The Exumas. There is good snorkeling on several small patch reefs north of the anchorage.
