Owen Sound is steeped in marine history. In 1911, the harbor held 643 vessels, many of which were passenger ships carrying railway passengers for the western lines of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Today, only the occasional freighter visits the harbor but lots of pleasure boats stop in. Owen Sound is a good spot for provisioning. For evening entertainment, the city has restaurants, lounges, movies and theater. Owen Sound is quite lively during the summer and fall. First settled in the mid-19th century, Meaford is a commercial and tourism center for the surrounding apple-growing district. A stroll through town presents many handsome brick mansions, an imposing city hall and the Meaford Museum (111 Bayfield St., 519-538-5974).
The Meaford Farmers’ Market is held on the waterfront on Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (seasonal). Meaford also boasts good restaurants and pubs close to the harbor.
