Corpus Christi is a major seaport on the Gulf of Mexico at the mouth of the Nueces River. This cosmopolitan city, with all the expected amenities, is a choice destination for the GIWW cruiser. Downtown is an easy walk from the waterfront. You can jog, bike or simply meander along the 1.5 miles of path along the downtown seawall while taking in some great views of the water. The boardwalk usually has a delightful breeze, making it an ideal place for windsurfing and sailing. The white sandy beaches are easily accessible and open to the public. Corpus Christi is a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts and bird watchers. You can fish for redfish, trout, and flounder in the bay, or head out to the Gulf of Mexico for deep sea fishing. The area is also home to a variety of bird species, including the endangered Whooping Crane. The 180-acre South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center is home to a variety of plant and animal species, and features themed gardens, walking trails, and a butterfly house.
