While not every cruiser sets sail in search of a new place to call home, the cruising lifestyle is rife with opportunities—whether it's finding the ideal liveaboard vessel, locating the perfect winter retreat, or stumbling upon a new home port. The journey often leads to hidden coastal gems, unexpected communities, and transformative experiences that redefine what home can mean.
Cruising and boating offer gateways to freedom and adventure. Sometimes, the journeys do more than just change your course —they redefine your life's permanent direction. What started as a quest for a larger boat to accommodate family adventures, morphed into an unexpected settling in a place that captured the hearts of Rick and Robin Law of Deltaville, Virginia.
Rick and Robin had spent years enjoying Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. As their family expanded with the additions of new in-laws and grandchildren, they acquired a Sea Ray 480 Motoryacht leading them to Lake Michigan, marking the beginning of an epic journey that would eventually reshape their future.

After navigating from the Great Lakes to Cape May and eventually home to Deltaville, Rick and Robin immersed themselves in the cruising lifestyle on short journeys around the Chesapeake Bay, exploring St. Michaels, Onancock, and other charming towns. They then set their sights on a winter escape to Key West—a favorite spot visited by air and land years prior.

The couple's plan was to cruise down the ICW to Key West and find the perfect marina for their new winter retreat. After three months in Florida they started their return to Virginia. But the journey home took an unexpected turn. What was supposed to be a brief overnight stop at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina turned into a new adventure as Rick and Robin discovered the island's amenities and vibrant community. Hilton Head offered superior marina services and the kind of activities perfect for their lifestyle — from dining and shopping to pickleball, a newfound passion for the couple.

The allure of Hilton Head proved irresistible. Upon returning to Virginia, Rick and Robin found themselves drawn back to the island's charm and quickly secured a slip at Shelter Cove Marina for a three-month winter stay. What was meant to be a temporary retreat transformed into a 2.5-year commitment. Ultimately, they decided to make their stay permanent, trading their beloved Sea Ray for a condo in one of Shelter Cove's communities. Today, they call Hilton Head home, fully embracing the coastal lifestyle and community they fell in love with. And the family and grandkids now have a new destination.
