Alpena is home of the nation’s only freshwater National Marine Sanctuary offering nautical exhibits at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. The center also serves as the Visitor Center for the preserve and is open year-round at 500 W. Fletcher St. (989-356-8805).
Many of the shipwrecks lie in less than 12 feet of water if you’d rather plan your own tour. Refer to Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve for details on several shipwrecks to explore.
