Great Inagua, BAH

Great Inagua is far off the beaten track for most cruisers. But those that make it to the Bahamas' southernmost outpost will be rewarded. The very active Morton Salt Works facility means that Matthew Town is a bustling settlement with everything you could need. 

If it isn't salt that Great Inagua is known for, then it is its beautiful flamingos. The Bahamas National Trust, with help from the Audubon Society, maintains the Inagua National Park on Great Inagua. It is home to more than 80,000 flamingos, the largest nesting colony of West Indian Flamingos in the western hemisphere, as well as many other birds, such as roseate spoonbills, rare reddish egrets, hummingbirds, blue herons and the endangered Bahamian parrot. More than 250 species of plants and animals (including wild donkeys and boar) live here. The road leading to the park is open to the public, but you will need a guide.
