Freeport, TX
The Brazos River has played a significant part of the history of Freeport. In the 1800s steamships and other boats carrying passengers and goods for trade traveled the river extensively. The banks were lined by plantations and used for transportation and business. The rising and falling waters of the river caused continuous flooding of the towns of Freeport and Valasco. Eventually, dams and a lock changed the river. Finally, it was rerouted and diverted to the west leaving the Old Brazos River as what appears today as a salt water lake.
