FL: Indian River, Intracoastal Mile 964.8, A1A North Causeway Bridge, Replacement Update
- Date Reported: Apr 14, 2025
- Reporter: Ted Stehle
- Source: CG 7th District LNM 42/24 and bridge tender
- Description:
Vecellio & Grogan, Inc. ("V&G"), on behalf of the bridge owner, FDOT, is conducting construction operations for the replacement of the A1A North Causeway Drawbridge across the AICW, mile 964.8, at Ft. Pierce, FL.
The entire width of the ICW channel will be periodically closed for 4 to 6 hours at a time from dawn to dusk during the week starting 4/14/2025. Mariners are advised to call the bridge at least two hours before arriving for the day's opening schedule. The bridge will operate on normal schedule on weekends and Federal holidays. The channel closures are scheduled to be in place until May 2, 2025, but may be extended.
An alternate route through the FL A1A Little Jim Bridge will remain open at all times for those who can clear the 14 ft height of the bridge at MHW.
Additionally, in-water work will at times partially restrict the navigable waterway to a width of 45 ft with barges to perform maintenance work on the bascules of the existing bridge and perform other associated construction activities until September 2027. Vessels needing the full width of the channel are required to provide the bridge tender with a 30-minute advance notice to allow the bascule work barge(s) to clear the channel.
During the evening/overnight hours, the channel will be unobstructed. All in-water equipment is required to be properly lighted. All mariners are requested to use caution and transit the area at a slow speed. For waterways questions or drawbridge operating issues, please contact USCG Sector Miami Waterways Division at (305) 535-4317, email SectorMiamiWaterways@uscg.mil.
