It grabbed on right away and was good all night. Nice dinghy dock at the marina/restaurant nearby and plenty to walk to in Portsmouth. I expected the wake to be bad as it is a busy harbour but the anchorage is far enough away from the channel that it was not an issue.

The marina to the south has a free dingy dock and a good restaurant. No issues with wakes and current is not strong. I highly recommend moving to the north side of hospital point if strong winds are predicted. We had to reset our anchor twice before we decided to move to the north side after the reached 25 to 35kn. The holding is much better there, but it is considered the same anchorage on the navigation charts.

Dropped 55 lb mantus M2 in 10 feet of water which held at 1000 rpm but broke out at 2000 rpm. Made two attempts in areas open areas. Dropped out at 25 feet closer to the channel which probably gets less use. Dug hard and held at 2000 rpm after skidding for 10'feet. We have a heavy 22k pound double ender with 57 hp yanmar. YMMV

As noted in some AC comments, this 4" heavy black cable isn't charted. Used a trip line to release. Advise anchoring further NW closer to R32, but out of channel.

As expected there's a ton of traffic including barges and cruise ships that tie up directly across from the anchorage. They run their generators 24/7 with the smell coming right into the anchorage. If it weren't for us getting supplies and packages here we wouldn't have stayed for more than one night. Tidewater marina was very friendly and let us tie up our dinghy and even helped us unload our bikes. There's also a free dock just around the corner and right next to the post office that was very convenient.

Not the quietest anchorage but then again it is in Norfolk. Get there early because the spots that aren't taken by the folks that appear to be long term (there were four boats when we arrived on Saturday and they were still there the following Thursday )fill up fast by locals enjoying the evening and other transients
We were happy to have an anchorage to start our waterway trip so we can't complain!View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

Dingy dockage at Waterside Marina or Portsmouth North Harbor which is free and central to shopping and restaurants. At this time, the Portsmouth North Harbor is undergoing repairs and boat dockage is limited but Dinghy dockage is still OK. Some wakes from passing tugs and barges mostly during the day. Crab pot are mostly at the northern end but there is plenty of room to anchor. ATT signal strong with 4G WiFi.

Dinghy dockage at Waterside Marina was $3 a day and gave access to Norfolk's restaurants and shopping. Dinghy dockage at Portsmouth North Harbor and High Street Landings is free and gives access to historic Portsmouth and shops and restaurants. We did experience occasional wakes from tug boats going by. Unfortunately, this anchorage has many crab pots which limit anchoring opportunities.
