Difficult to find a suitable spot in this harbor due to numerous derelict boats, abandoned junk boats rafted together, and a few private mooring balls. Scenery includes boats damaged and beached in shallow water or on the island.

I anchor south of the anchorage icon, in front on a free day dock and out of the canal. 10' depth and not good holding. the boat before me drift during the night and anchor elsewere. I put 2 front anchor and stay there 2 nights without any problem. The mill is hide by the little island at this place so you only see the waterfront. everythings you need from fuel to food is at a walking distance. You have a nice playground for kids not more then 15 minutes down the front street.

Georgetown is one of the oldest cities in SC and boasts more national historic homes than Charleston. But the anchorage does leave something to be desired. The paper and steel mills run 24/7 and if you are downwind, the smells are just not that nice. The bottom is soupy mud and your anchor will take quite some time to bury in deep. There is excellent wind protection from all directions and the towns multiple dingy docks make it easy to fog ashore to explore. People are super friendly, there are lots of restaurants and touristy shops. There are three ice cream shops that all compete with one another and a bakery. Watch your depths closely as there is lots of shoaling here. We anchored just West of the marker. There are multiple permanently moored boats that take up quite a bit of anchorage space.

First visit to Georgetown. Good holding; easy access to public docks for dinghy; trolley tour well worth the $15.00; great restaurants, Sat. Fresh Market and fun little shops to browse through on front street.

There seemed to be plenty of room for anchoring. We opted to anchor, an access shore via the free dock. Great restaurants, friendly folks, and cool Main Street, dog friendly. We pulled anchor in the morning and tied up at the free pier, had breakfast at coffee shop, and the proprietor Ron offered us the use of his van to get groceries at Walmart. Southern Hospitality at its finest. Don’t miss this stop, Georgetown is awesome.
