This is an open roadstead anchorage with wind protection from prevailing southerly winds. However, the wakes from the ship channel are non-stop. Strong current runs parallel with the beach.
This anchorage could save you some time on the run between Offatts Bayou and Port Arthur. Not a comfortable anchorage.

We have been through here twice in the last six months and never had a delay. Lock master actually took us ahead of the commercial traffic both times. Very accommodating to pleasure craft.

We stayed here in our powerboat back in November as stated in my other review here.
This trip we’re on our sailboat and decided to stay here again. The only thing I would like to add is that our powerboat has less than 3 feet of draft. Flying Cloud has 5 feet. As we reached the bulkhead we touched bottom and couldn’t get any closer than 3 feet. I was able to leap ashore and secured our lines. Long dock lines are necessary here. The bollards are about 60 feet apart. You can walk to the Gulf from here

Rather rough bulkhead requiring good fenders and/or fender boards. Spent one night. A few campers in the large parking area. No services available. Had a very quiet night. Would stop here again

Decided to come here to get some fuel injector problems fixed. Nearest shop was in Victoria thirty miles away. Used Senior Citizens Shuttle ($5) to take injectors to Victoria Injection Service. Two days later the owner delivered them to the boat. Price was very reasonable. At this time the marina is recovering from hurricane Harvey. The breakwater was damaged so when the prevailing SE wind gets to 15 knots it gets a little rolling in the marina. Worse the more easterly the wind. Everything you need to provision is within two miles including Ace Hardware, auto parts and the hospital is a half mile.
    However, there’s no public transportation.
No fuel here but harbormaster can arrange for delivery.
Nice day room with kitchen and nice showers. TV lounge and library onsite.
I can’t say enough about the folks at this municipal marina. A wonderful experience for us.
Prices were $20 night. We stayed a month and got the monthly rate.

I draw five feet so anchoring in the four foot location shown in Waterway Guide was not possible. Just to the North of the private channel in ten feet will afford better protection from wakes. The island is very busy. A tug and barge twice a day and crew boats up to eight times a day. Today we had a severe weather warning for heavy wind and rain as well as a tornado warning right across the channel. It came out of the North with 60 mph winds. We did just fine where we were. Excellent holding.

One of the cleanest and professional yards I’ve ever seen in 45 years of cruising.

Had to make an emergency stop here. Spent a week on the only transient dock they have. Dock is very small and on the concrete bulkhead. But very protected. Yvonne and Joe are outstanding folks. The marina is owned and operated by San Patricio County. Rate $35 day. Insurance required. Electric and water all behind a locked gate which makes it VERY private. Don’t miss Micky’s Bar and Grill right next door. Shopping and anything you need is close by. A little bit out of the way up the channel. But worth it
