While off the traditional Great Loop Route, Lake Superior offers excellent remote cruising. Superior rewards the patient cruiser with haunting beauty and grand adventure. Boasting a surface area of nearly 31,700 square miles, the “Mother of the Great Lakes” is the world’s largest freshwater lake. It is the third largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, behind Lake Baikal in Russia and Lake Tanganyika in Africa.

Lake Superior touches the Canadian Shield and shows the most evidence of glaciation. Its waters are cold and deep. The scenery on the northern border includes coniferous forests, humbling cliffs, tumbling waterfalls, dense forests, uninhabited islands and breathtaking anchorages.
