Monhegan Island, ME

Long a favorite retreat for artists and writers, Monhegan Island is far enough off the beaten path to remain relatively undisturbed by tourism and commercial development.
Even though it is only 9 miles southwest of the ferry landing in Port Clyde and little more than a dozen miles from the moorings at Tenants Harbor, the island never seems to attract more than a few sailors and a scattering of rough-clad day hikers who quickly blend in with the island’s fishers and summer resident painters. They disappear along the island’s 17 miles of mapped trails to imposing outlooks and quiet glens or they are off to visit the rustic studios of some 20 professional artists who regularly display their works here.
