Castine is one of the oldest towns in New England, pre-dating the colonial settlement at Plymouth by 7 years. It was originally a fur trading post and remains well worth a visit.
During its highly contested early colonialist days, Castine changed hands 25 times among the English, French, Dutch, Spanish and American colonists. The town is rich with reminders of its exciting past.
Paul Revere ruined his military career in an ill-fated attempt to capture Fort George from the British in 1779. The fort is open to the public but the entire town is on the National Historic Register.
