New Bedford, MA
New Bedford at the mouth of the Acushnet River is busy, commercial, colorful and imbued with a historic seafaring flavor.
New Bedford was once the hub of the American whaling industry, and it retains many a reminder of the days when its fleet was larger than all others combined. The harbor is an active commercial and fishing port, still boasting a fleet of trawlers, draggers, scallopers and lobster boats. Ferries to Cuttyhunk, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are all available from New Bedford. The New Bedford Whaling Museum (508-997-0046) and the Seamen’s Bethel, a church with the pew once occupied by Moby Dick author Herman Melville, are both easy to visit on foot.
