Narragansett Bay, RI

Although Newport is a world-class yachting center and a high point of Narragansett Bay, the Bay has much, much more to offer. Narragansett Bay stretches 18 nm from Block Island Sound to the Providence River and was named for the original inhabitants of Rhode Island. The bay is also an estuary of national significance and a spawning ground and habitat for winter flounder, lobster, hard shell clams, seals and eel grass.
Rolling hills, green fields, woods and houses surround Narragansett Bay. It offers protected waters, well-marked waterways, sheltered coves and attractive ports of call. You can anchor nearly anywhere you find a lee or a cove and in many places you can go ashore to swim, picnic or hike.

Newport abounds in maxi-yachts, 70-knot powerboats, cruise ships, round-the-world racers and luxurious cruising palaces. The Classic Yacht Regatta, Admiral's Cup trials, the New York Yacht Club Cruise and the Volvo Ocean Race and other special events with some regularity. The America's Cup trials and races dominated Newport for many decades and the legacy of those events is evident everywhere. At moorings around the harbor you will see many 12-meter racers from the classic period of the America's Cup. These refurbished racers are used for day charters and occasional regattas.
Of course, you cannot visit Newport and not hike some portion of the Cliff Walk. The 3.5-mile walk starts at First Beach at Memorial Blvd. and runs south to Bellevue Ave. Aptly named, there are abrupt drops to 70 feet along the trail, as well as amazing panoramic views.
