5-30-24 Great docks but challenging to access if current is swift. Docks are located on the outside of the river bend with strongest current. Timing tide is advised. Great staff with dock information and assistance when docking. Friendly historical town with museum and local restaurants.

Located about 5 miles up the Roanoke River from the Albemarle Sound. The route is well marked with plenty of water. Watch for the crab pots as there are some through here. The docks were very nice with all of the amenities. You are docking parallel to the current so plan for that while docking. The docks are located at the base of the lighthouse. Clean facilities including laundry are located at the maritime museum. Everyone in the town is very receptive and friendly to strangers. There are a few places to eat downtown but they are not always open so check the hours when you arrive. Good protection from inclement weather. There are a couple of museums here that look at nautical and civil war history. Pompous, 30 amp power and potable water are provided as part of your dockage which is free as part of the Albemarle Loop. This is fairly remote and the majority of river traffic is from the fishermen. A couple of grocery stores are a bike ride away.
