Somes Sound. ME

Considered the only true fjord on the North American east coast, Somes Sound begins its dramatic 6-mile cleavage into the heart of Mount Desert Island at the busy channel off Clark Point, the tip of the peninsula that separates Southwest Harbor from the sound. Throughout most of the sound’s length, 600 to 800-foot hills ease down to the water’s edge and beyond. Mountains of substantially greater size add grandeur to an awe-inspiring landscape and seascape.
