Kiptopeke Beach, VA

Kiptopeke Beach, VA

Kiptopeke State Park is the final resting place for nine concrete ships constructed during World War II and provides a fascinating look back at the history of the area. McCloskey and Co. built them in 1942 in response to the scarcity of steel during the war. In 1948 the ships were towed here and deliberately sunk in a long, north to south line forming a breakwater to protect the ferry dock at Kiptopeke Beach.
