Boca Raton, FL
The area now known as Boca Raton is shown on old Spanish navigational maps charts as Boca de Ratones, meaning “mouth of the harbor of the hidden rocks.” It appears that the name was originally applied to Biscayne Bay near Miami Beach, but early mapmakers moved the name to the present location.
The construction of the Florida East Coast Canal (today’s ICW) and the Florida East Coast Railway in the 1890s brought pioneers and farmers to the area. In 1925, eccentric architect Addison Mizner was hired to design a world-class resort community. His exclusive hotel, known as the Cloister Inn, was completed in 1926, and remains a landmark as the Boca Raton Resort and Club.
