This stretch of the Tombigbee seems to have nearly all anchorages along the side of the channel, not tucked off in a creek or a cut which is what we prefer. However, the river is nice and wide here, enough for four boats to comfortably fit. We had a little trouble getting the anchor to grab (as did our buddy boat) where we dropped the hook in 12 feet, but once it did we didn't move all night. One barge passed after we anchored who said we were in a good position off the channel (and we were rafted). Only one barge passed early in the morning but the wake was very minimal.

On the charts, the Sunflower Bend Cutoff shows depths of 10-18 feet at the entrance, but there was a lot of overhanging trees and debris in the water so we did not attempt to enter the creek. On the opposite bank (eastern side), south by maybe 150 yards, is the Sunflower East anchorage. This is a very good anchorage. The anchorage is well outside of the channel. Between the red buoy and the shore, the depth ranges from 15 feet down to 8 feet all the way to within 20 feet of the shoreline. There is plenty of room for several boats. The current is very slight along the bank, so wind was more of a factor. The anchor set immediately in soft mud. We set a stern anchor, but I am not sure it was needed. The anchorage is exposed to the west and south, so high winds from those directions an might be an issue. The wakes from passing barges on the river was very slight. The shoreline on both the east and west sides of the river have sandbars that can easily be accessed with a dingy for letting our furry friends romp. It is quiet and dark at night, allowing excellent stargazing.

Was a great area, minimal traffic. Water depth was around 20ft. Water clean. Even swam to cool down but quickly noticed the current taking my husband away. lol. If you are not a strong swimmer be prepared and maybe tethered.

We came in after dark and anchored in 20' of water 150' from shore. We would have liked to get closer in with better light—the first tow coming upriver said we were okay. Good holding, current kept us straight and anchor came up clean. Nice sandbar for going ashore. One bar T-Mobile reception.

We were in 6 feet of water about 100 feet of shore. We were out of the channel and held fast all night. Current and minimal wind kept us straight. Barges told us we were in a good location. That being said we had our windows open and Barbara was awoken a few times by the noises of their engines. They also shine lights on the boat. Wake was minimal but noticeable after already being awake.

Great anchorage heading upstream from Dog River. Poor cell service, but great holding and a peaceful night.

Great anchorage. Just outside the red markers about 50 feet off shore. Anchor set the first time and held with no issues. An east wind would require a stern anchor to stay out of the channel. Current held us in place. A very large sandy beach for walking the dog. We did see bear and deer tracks on the beach. Anchor came up clean.
