The old wharf is in a sad state but provides good protection from S-SW-W. Any wind with an Easterly component leaves one very close to a Lee shore and we had to move after an early evening unexpected wind shift. Beware the "patches" of sand as most are hard marl. Better holding in the weedy patches paradoxically.
The dinghy ride is interesting though many parts very shallow past the main channel. Surprisingly, our only mangrove dinghy ride in the Abacos where we saw no turtles, rays etc.

Our 3rd stay at Donny's this time on the end of the linear dock. Prices have gone up to $75/ day on the dock plus $5 for 30A electric. Large water fills are $0.20/ gallon.
Donny has enlarged the docks since we were here2 yrs ago. Also added a sandy, shaded gathering area. Donny is incredibly knowledgeable, helpful & just a really wonderful man who looks after all boaters, working hard to make a living post Dorian. Check out the museum in New Plymouth on Tuesday/Thurs. read about HHI rescued 6 during a Whale rage in 1987.

Lots of boats here today and we had to anchor behind the shoal. Lots more turtle grass out here, had to work a bit to get our 100lb Spade to penetrate but finally buried and solid in 15-20. A surprising amount of small debris on sea bed noted when snorkeling anchor. Lots of traffic including ferries.

There are several new houses being constructed & new roofs going on the existing so not as scenic with no trespassing signs & cameras on the dock.
We arrived with a ENE wind and were comfortable until it shifted E at which point significant chop builds thru the gap between Big & Little Fish. The wind shifted to SE overnight & anchorage was quite uncomfortable so we missed our opportunity to explore the coral garden. Better sand closer to shore, we dragged 20' or so then dug in.

Following Addison Chan's route with the recommended SE correction at the shoal between (which is also apparent on Navionics) we transited at low tide seeing no less than 6' on 3 separate, calibrated depth sounders. Good to remember that most of the channel all the way to Barricouta Shoal marker is mostly 6-7' max.

An update to my previous review: The channel at the North entrance of the river is now deeper than charted with no apparent bar. We entered at Tide minus 1' and saw 12-14' all the way in with 8-9' over much of the center channel surrounding the WWG anchor symbol. Lots of room for many boats but no shore access for pets

Open, easy to access roadstead type Anchorage. Around the bend but before the shoal mitigates chop from the SE. in mid channel more than 250 yds from homes docks so GA legal. We found 7-9' with a -1' tide. Only a few center consoles. Typical strong reversing currents found throughout the Lowcountry.

This a good anchorage for a quick overnight stay. Easy in/ out in 9-12 ft. Throughout Swansboro, the current is brisk, we prefer this location to the anchorage close to town where, if you drag, the current sets you down on the low bridge. Lots of small, fast boat traffic/ wake during day, quiet at night. Noisy due to traffic if wind is from the N.

We have stayed here several times as we have friends who keep their boat here. store, staff, YROC Restaurant are all good. A bit of a hike to the bathrooms, pool & laundry (though there are closer toilets between the restaurant & store when it's open.)
Their lack of pump out is legendary - mos. Almost a year! This time we called before arrival: "new pumpout being installed today". When we left 2 days later: "pumpout has been installed, but hasn't been tested yet"!
No courtesy car. Nearest grocery store is in Hayes, VA, a short Uber/Lyft.
Be careful on the docks. They are floaters, surfaced with Trex. Now showing their age, there are lots of sags and uneven parts due to the multiple hinged hatches that can be a surprising trip hazard

We try to hit Centreville on the weekends, or O'dark 30 when they are still on the demand schedule. It makes it much easier to time the trip down to N Landing Swing bridge which only opens on the hour & half hour during the day (incl. w/e's) for our slow trawler.

The bridge tender is a man of few words but polite and attentive. We also radioed ahead knowing openings are in the hour & half hour, only had to slow down due to the no wake zones. That said, the radio traffic after we passed, indicated most boaters don't have a clue about the schedule - probably quite exasperating to put up with for a full shift

We approached the anchorage via the Middle Ground "Inlet" which saves some time coming from Albermarle Sound but 6'8" with NE wind.
Island gives nice protection from fetch but allows wind to keep the bugs down (we anchored just inside the 5'9"line but still in 9'.)
If unsettled weather or S winds, would prefer South or East Lake anchorages. Great sunset view, lots of room between the crab floats.

Easy in and out to the E dock. Flat rate dockage includes good power, Wi-Fi, pool & laundry. We planned on anchoring in the Creek but too good to pass up, we ended up staying 2 nights, very quiet, beautiful sunsets. A great stop heading up or down the Potomac.

A very large roadstead type Anchorage in 9-12' which is protected from fetch to the S but open to N winds in which case the Thomas point side gives more protection. The farther N you go, the more crab pots & stickier mud. On summer weekends & holidays, be prepared for some serious waking as the boats anchored at Tim's head N, then it's quiet all night

Hard to be profitable if you don't maximize covers. The Wharf offered a voucher, unfortunate that the previous reviewer couldn't use it. Our experience was great. A huge upgrade from the old Gangplank which it replaced. BR, showers, laundry & club room/concierge all very nice plus great location for bars, restaurants, Metro, Smithsonian etc. worth the trip up the Potomac

We have anchored here many times. After a relatively narrow channel in & around the well charted shoal(s), the N harbor has 7-9' and though appears full at 1st glance, we usually find a spot. Open to SE winds though the sand spit reduces the wave action. SW winds , you lie across the channel. Very good Marina immediately adjacent, though groceries, hardware & WM are a mile or 2

The WWG icon is over a sand bar between 2 anchorages so difficult to know whether the reviews pertain to the "Red Gazebo" roadstead Anchorage or the small bay tucked behind it. With a storm immediate we did not try the bay since no record of depths. Slightly N & W of the red gazebo& the shoal, there is 12' of water with good holding which served our purpose. If you venture too far N or too far S, shoaling to 5-6' happens quickly.

We tried unsuccessfully to contact Everglades Rod & Gun Club for overnight stay. The voice mails on both numbers are usually full. On one occasion we were able to leave a message which was returned the following day. E mail was answered within 12 hrs. (@1am). Turns out, messages including phone are answered offsite by a mother/daughter combo, who don't communicate to each other!
We did get there for lunch. Definitely a cool, interesting old lodge with interesting history revolving around Mr. Collier who owned it as a base for building the Tamiani Trail. It is being maintained including some new piles being driven at their fixed face dock. Still quite rudimentary so we were much happier at the excellent facility just upriver at Everglades Isle (ultra upscale Motor Coach park with an amazingly large floating concrete dock system and first class clubhouse/pool facilities).
Walk or dinghy 20 minutes to visit and eat at the Rod & Gun Club.
fwiw, look carefully at the airboat tours. Most do not go out in the grasslands of the park, instead they explore private islands and mangroves similar to the islands you pass coming in though still fun for many.

There is a separate business Jax Marine that operates out of the same facility so sometimes, the Bathrooms are less than pristine,

    Lots of room.

This is a handy essentially roadstead type anchorage with the added benefit that the two small islands (East & North of the WW GUIDE Anchor each have sand spits on their W sides that can break any wave action. We have anchored behind both several times and found the holding solid in thick black mud as mixed with fine shells. At night there is no boat traffic. But weekends a
Patently local traffic will steer anchor to the islands and party on the San spits.
Fun to watch the pelicans roost at dusk on the more S island but be a bit smelly!
Approach is straight forward from green 21 with 7' right up close to the islands proper. This year we did hear a clunk passing to the E of the more N island, (we have a full keel protecting running gear) probably a piece of a previous wreck?

They use ch68 as their working channel but due to antenna location they often switch to cell phone for clarity.
Jim was wonderful in giving us a lift up the dock and showing us the facilities after a very easy check-in. Beautiful pool, hot tub and clubhouse. Cc access laundry. Pump output in your slip on certain days, otherwise at the fuel dock. Just remember, this is FL so unlike other states, the fuel price they quote you does not include 6.5% state tax

The dolphins are well maintained. The cleats are arranged E-W so to reach them from your bow involved maneuvering carefully with one at your bow and one astern in order to pass your line around/ through the large galvanized cleat. Our bow is 8+ feet from the water so made for some interesting gymnastics in a 15-20knt wind. Most lower bow heights will be fine. Fortunately the dolphins are spaced at different distances (we had 70+ feet between #4 & #5). Once hooked on, a very quiet night before catching the W bound lock thru @0730.

Echo the previous reviewers comments. This is what I would describe as an "Ultra-Upscale RV Park". The clubhouse is gorgeous easily rivaling most upscale yacht & golf clubs. (Perhaps not surprisingly since the monthly RV rate is around $200/ day!)
They charge a flat rate so the bigger your boat, the better the deal for a beautiful pool, tiki bar etc. free laundry during clubhouse hours.
Josh tied us up and was one of the best we've seen anywhere. Turns out he captains boat tours as a side gig. Other posters referenced the current. Compared to what we see typically in SC, current is very manageable, though the wind was blowing 10-15. Dianne handles reservations and check in very efficiently but be aware, reservations are pd by cc in advance and are non refundable.
We draw 5' so the approach channel from the Gulf involves some sphincter puckering at less than 2' tide in a few places notably markers 11/12. The buoys were moved. Then the sand moved. Now,

Stopped in for fuel. $3.99/ gallon best around. However a few caveats.
They don't answer VHF (but do answer phone)
There is absolutely no signage to guide you to the fuel dock, even once you are in the correct basin. It's the dock to the Right (upstream) of the travel lift. The pumps are not visible on land, if you're lucky you may see the blue & green fuel hoses lying on the dock in front of a truly ancient Hatteras on the inward side of the floating dock to confirm the correct location.
Dock master is friendly &efficient but often busy running the store, and it's a good stroll to the fuel dock.
The current is significant and continues well past slack tide further down stream due to fresh water inflow. That said, the current is much higher as you enter the basin and more manageable at the near shore dock.
Pretty much self serve and there is only 1 hose. Took us best part of 2 hrs. to acquire 700 gallons of diesel.
Finally the river approach looks tight about halfway, but we saw 8' at low tide (-9") at the tightest spot. Everywhere else was fine.

At first glance - it is unappealing. But in reality, a very easy roadstead anchorage. Just nose in as draft/tide stage dictates and drop the hook, current will win the battle here, but surprisingly good protection froM SE wind driven waves lap. There is a large public ramp across the AICW & free dock 1/4 mile away so boat traffic is generally quiet & courteous. Late pm, much easier than trying to find free dock space.

Open wide anchorage with small bar to cross from AICW. Slight roll from inlet with SE wind but otherwise good wave protection & little thru traffic. Nice place to hole up waiting for tide or after a late push thru Little Mud River shoals. Current is king as far as how you will lie to the wind, but holding is good. This anchorage is wide and offers less depth (13'-21' MHW) with 7' tide compared to the 25-30' in neighboring anchorages that make adequate scope challenging for the narrower rivers.

Shroud Cay is a great spot with something for everyone. The S. Mooring field has a lot of balls -all in good shape. but also large areas in 8-10' MLW to anchor -just remember to pay on line whether you anchor or use a ball. The S. anchorage is more exposed to the SE than the N. Both are totally open to the W.
There are great expanses of mangroves to explore by kayak or SUP - just watch the tide as the creeks can run for miles and many start their trip with the flood tide only to discover they have to fight the Ebb tide on the way back also.
The dinghy cruise begins an hour before high tide at the N end of the N Shroud Cay Anchorage & is shown on Explorer charts. When you come to the Large T junction where the turtles hang out, make sure you take the Lt turn and you will see the Sound shortly thereafter. (The Right turn runs for 3/4 mile mid Cay before becoming too shallow for O/B's. though Kayaks can complete the loop.)
By dinghy, there are several shallow spots near the entrance as well as the T junction but generally 3-6' 1hr either side of high tide. There is a small picturesque beach at the Sound entrance to the creek. Just around the point you will see the rocky scramble up to "Camp Driftwood" with nice views thru the palm trees over the Sound and Banks.

This is a really well protected anchorage. The Sampson Cay Marina & Club closed in 2013 & the owner maintained it privately for personal use. Sothebys shows the island now under contract. The extensive docks are intact but not for uninvited use. Because the marina is closed-no mega yachts in the channel so you can anchor in 10' good sand deep into the outer harbor, with good protection from wind & waves (except of course W.)and minimal current. There is a lot more room here than first glance at the chart would suggest. Dinghy to the inner harbor and beyond to enjoy the extensive sand flats at lower tides with some landing possible on the Big Sampson (N side).

The further N you go, the less pig beach traffic. Laundry, liquor & beer outlet are combined in the building 300 yds behind SCYC across the local recreation space. Trash disposal in a trailer just behind SCYC or a local boat comes by regularly to pick up (fee). This is a handy anchorage -easily accessible from the Banks. We took the Explorer VPR route from Little Farmer's Cay to Oven Rock with our 5' draft at 1' tide -minimum was 6'.
Anchorage gives great protection from the E with a little rolling with Southerly components -obviously completely exposed to W. You can carry 5-7' almost to the shore. Fall back as much or as little as you prefer into 9-11'+. Lots of room here nad we saw from 3-13 boats. Others have described the shore trails to the cave & Sound side beach. It is an easy dinghy ride to Little Farmers. WE had an excellent lunch at Ocean Cabin. The restaurant & bar is spotless and Terry & his wife are convivial, thoughtful and knowledgeable hosts originally from LFC but with interesting life experiences in Libya and other parts of Africa. The fried snapper was sublime with a very thin coating -perfectly cooked. The lobster tail was huge and virtually covered the plate! It is a small 2 (sometimes 3) person operation, so be sure to phone or call on VHF 16 in advance for your selection. Otherwise the bar is often open and Terry will do his best to accommodate you for light fare. Trash can be left with the man with the black truck at the dock for a donation or one of the boatmen may accept it. Exumas at its most natural.

Good protection from E but S component results in some wrap around the point & of course the proximity to the cut means keeled boats will swing with the current primarily. Mods: please change the heading as there are No Moorings
This is an interesting stop. Perry's Marine Research center closed abruptly 2012 when NOAA funding ran out. The size & scope of the project is quite amazing as you explore. Not really the "Apocalypse " feeling described by some shortly after it was abandoned, and walking through derelict buildings quickly loses its appeal. But definitely an interesting place to explore since there is essentially no one there.
The approach is straightforward per Explorer charts. We carried 7+ feet into the anchorage with1 1/2' of tide. No moorings remain. The water is clear so watch where you drop the hook. The deeper water is close to the island with a 10' area W. Of the old dock (not safe to use). We anchored in clean sand at the Eastern end of the bay N. of the "Sand Dry at LW" notation. Good protection from N to E.
The island has beautiful beaches on the Sound side-all charted on Explorer chart. You can dinghy up to the stone steps or the concrete ramp (pilings on either side) but Do not trust the main dock. Most light items except old computers have been removed and all but 1 building (recently roofed & painted inside) are delapidated . The "Consp house" on the N. Point is an easy 1 mile road hike then follow a somewhat overgrown road-path uphill to reach it affording marvelous views. The deck & floors are still in decent shape though N porch roof is collapsing albeit safe enough for pics. You can then backtrack to the next path to the easily seen beach SE of the point. Follow the beach, cross the short point along the marked path. As you cross the second headland, pick up the marked trail to the South which will cross the airstrip by the abandoned hangar. The road leads back to the abandoned research center.
Another trail leads from the SE end of the airstrip past the Banks side beach then up to Perry's Peak-highest point in the Exumas (39m). Easier to dinghy to the beach the pick up the trail at the SE end.

Be sure to catch the Friday night "Grill & Chill" on the dock- local vendor cooks while boaters provide the live music. Slow boats leaving before sunrise need to be cautious if the numerous boats anchored on both sides of the channel, if the wind changed overnight, don't assume they aren't in the channel. Also know that the fuel barge often arrives at sunrise. Fortunately, sends a Secuite message before he enters the cut.

Safe Harbor has done a good job with staff & facilities. Just completing upgrade of laundry facilities (folding table pending, all new machines work well). Restaurant is now open.

Very easy in/out from AICW. We had good holding in 15-20 knots. AICW wake settles at night. We hauled up 30' of old rope & some RG6 cable with anchor, along with the usual sticky mud!

Nice protected anchorage off the AICW. Usually appears crowded with party boats on weekends. They typically are 4 hr charters so they move along and spots often open up late afternoon. Most are just having fun in the sun but all have large stereos. A bonus is you can run your generator if needed in the afternoon without bothering anyone. Everything quiets down @ sundown excepting the AICW racers.
There is shore access E of AICW to walk in park. There is a free dinghy dock approx. 2 miles by dinghy (only 1/2 of which is in the no wake zone) at George English Park. The park/ dock are actually 0.4m SW of anchorage as the crow flies, but no other way to get there. Small Publix is 2 blocks E of dock & CVS is 3 blocks W of dinghy dock.
    We usually stay here Southbound.

Beautiful secluded & protected rock lined harbor. (Private sand beach @SW corner, though weedy). Perfect except in a strong SE blow as the rock walls funnel & reflect the waves & back you up towards shear rock cliffs - not for the faint of heart with this (unusual) wind direction. Last time we were there, watched a moose swim across the Lake just outside the harbor

Large open anchorage in 13' of water. But read the charts folks, this is one of 2 main channels leading to Masonboro inlet. It is NOT a no wake zone. Especially on weekends, everyone will be going past or even anchoring near you. Sport fish in the early am, & center consoles all day. Quiets down at night. In summer, good breezes with moderate chop in the afternoon are the norm. It works well for us as a mid-late afternoon stop heading N.or S. Longer than that, a bit tiring.

Easy in, easy out anchorage with lots of space & good holding. Wind protection is fair -large open anchorage. The downsides are that it is next to an industrial plant and is just outside the no wake zone, so until dusk, it's rolly & noisy but as a late day anchorage, a welcome site!

Large anchorage with good holding in 8-10' mlw so by choosing your spot amongst the well spaced crab floats, you can find wave protection from the marsh as well as some wind protection from the treed areas. We much prefer it to the bugfest @ Tuckahoe Point (Alligator River end of the canal. ) A few watermen in mornings and occasional center console. Quiet at night.

Very picturesque town with all you need within walking distance except groceries. Museum is worth seeing though the curation is uneven. This anchorage is great from S or W. NE might be problematic. Lots of boat traffic that stops at dusk. We had 2 storms blow through in 2 days -each with 180 deg wind shifts but hook never budged in the mud.

Ok first remember this a Bahamian fuel dock -so built for the fuel barge height wise. Otherwise solid dock with small low level dock parallel and immediately the shore for small boats.
Contact them on vhf16 someone will come down to help with lines unless they are on lunch. The good news is you are buying the same fuel they use to run the power plant -clean tanks, tested for water regularly or their island power generators go down. Usually a few cents cheaper than Spanish Wells.

Back again after dodging thunderstorms en route from Manteo-easy day's run. Entered creek at low tide-5 1/2' depth @ S side of entrance then deepens to 9-12' within a few hundred feet. 150' on either side if you anchor in middle of channel. Room for 8-10 boats our size

The only Marina in Spanish Wells but it is very nice -completely rebuilt in 2016. Everything is clean, neat and well maintained and this is reflected in the price. Fixed docks, but solid, good power and water - we did not find it salty.
The access is straight forward but narrow, favor the mangroves as you head to Port to the Yacht Haven. Treadwell is very helpful with lines and Leroy, the manager can help with most everything else. 1/2 mile walk to a large supermarket. Smaller convenience stores along the docks too. If you don't want to fight with the reefs and prices taking your own boat to Harbour Island, it's a surprisingly easy 1 hr. trip each way via water taxi from Gov dock to Jean Bay, Eleuthera land taxi to 3 island dock then water taxi to Harbour Island where you can rent a golf cart on the dock to explore. The pink sand beach on the ocean side is sublime with everything from beach chairs, horseback riding, local food at the beach bars to 1st class dining at your disposal.
If heading North to the Abacos, the Eastern channel is quite straight forward despite the foreboding comments in AC. The Explorer charts have the Lat Long for the Ridley Head inner and outer waypoints. You must be precise but the channel carries 25' or so through the short reef. Actually easier at low tide when you can see the reef awash. For a slow boat like ours, saves 2-3 hours.

Basically there is nowhere to anchor but Pete's Pub has approx. 15 mooring balls @$30/night. Pay at the bar.
Delightful setting, with casual, but not inexpensive, beach bar set on a sand beach with good dinghy access.
The harbour approach through a clearly marked channel is shallow with 4' at MLW and 7'+ at high tide (soft bottom). Inside gives 10-13' at the moorings. A previous AC reviewer thought the tides were 2 hrs before Pelican Harbour. We found they matched Pelican almost exactly. 1/4 mile hike to the lighthouse ruins through dense brush gives a lovely view or you can walk 200 ft up the boardwalk behind the pub to see the NE Providence channel. Lots of turtles in harbour. Be sure to look through the gallery museum to get a sense of the history of Pete's father who started the place as an art foundry decades ago. Pete subsequently started the pub and is now the artist in residence while his son runs the pub. The vibe is very laid back and the fresh fish is excellent. If you are lucky you can get a foundry tour where they make beautiful & intricate lost wax bronze sculptures.
Definitely worth the wait for the tide.

Unlike the previous review, we loved it here. Attentive and communicative staff to help us dock, a very friendly town of 800 people. Most things available but limited selection. Strong winds with N or NE components flood the lower town routinely but you will have lots of depth. From the SW, the dock depths can get skinny. Marina is very protected, but you will be steps from the Toucan restaurant, the Tiki bar and live outdoor entertainment on many weekends and holidays. Lots of regulars hang out here once the Tiki bar opens at 1600. Everyone is chill & friendly-kids, dogs, cats, golf carts-all good fun but don’t plan on an early night if a band is scheduled, just join in or watch firm your cockpit.

Beautiful quiet spot provided a stunning sunset. Saw 5’5” briefly at entrance then 10-14’. Navionics seems accurate. Minimal current, the only wind protection is marsh so no fetch, fortunately good holding and depth maintained almost to the bank so just enough room to swing our 50’ on 5:1 scope. Bugs in August weren’t bad but you will need screens. Bridge noise was negligible. Loved it.

In addition to the mooring balls there are 3 new overnight transient slips adjacent to the dinghy dock/ day (free transient dock). Limited to 55’ LOA & 17’ beam. 50A (new ELCI , so older boats without on board may trip breaker repeatedly) good water, public restrooms, close to beach (1 block) Publix (1/4 mile) very close to multiple restaurants/bars. $60/ night-booked exclusively on Dockwa but Larry the Dockmaster is very responsive. Great spot as an alternative to anchoring out when you need supplies or a lazy meal out.
